oiktoz is a culture and arts initiative that set out with the motto Plenty of Culture, Lots of Art.
It is a vibrant, growing community with a website, an art club, a magazine, an art newsletter and, already, many oiktozians. It publishes in two languages, Turkish and English.
One day, one of the founders watched the film “oiktos” and was deeply moved by it. The film tells the story of a man who takes pleasure in being pitied and keeps doing pitiable things so that the pleasure never ends. Wondering who else might share those same feelings, the founder let out a sigh. The same idea also ran through the books they were reading and the plays they were seeing. When they eagerly told the other founder about the film, the reply came in the form of quotes from a book the other founder had read. This conversation, where cinema met literature, is what gave rise to oiktoz.
The pair changed one letter of oiktos and gave it a new meaning.
Today, oiktoz is a collective that tells the stories of people who take pleasure in engaging with culture and the arts, and who create in this field so that the pleasure never ends.
“oiktozian” is the name we give to writers on oiktoz.net. You too can publish your own works and reviews on oiktoz.net and become an oiktozian.

Under the oiktoz umbrella, we run an art club where every month we recommend books, films and plays, take suggestions from our participants, and read a lot, watch a lot and talk about it a lot. Each month we hold one in-person meeting (in Istanbul, for now) and one online meeting. Thanks to the online meetings, we welcome members to our club from all over Türkiye and abroad. We don’t just promise you books to read and films and plays to watch; we also offer you the chance to join a new social circle and grow in the arts within it. It is a free magazine, published quarterly and digitally for now, that will also reach its readers in print in the future. It features outstanding reviews from the oiktoz universe, valuable works by our guest writers, and interviews with leading names and creators in literature and the arts.
