The Foundation for the Promotion, Research, Democracy and Secular Formation of Turkey (TÜLOV) celebrated the 25th anniversary of its founding with a magnificent concert at İzmir Metropolitan Municipality’s Ahmed Adnan Saygun Arts Centre (AASSM). The concert, which lasted around two and a half hours, drew a large and enthusiastic audience.
TÜLOV’s 25th anniversary was celebrated with a concert at AASSM. At the concert, conducted by Dr Emre Üstgül – oud player, faculty member at Adnan Menderes University’s Turkish Music Conservatory and the foundation’s artistic director – messages from Özgür Özel, Chair of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), and Dr Cemil Tugay, Mayor of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, were read out. Following the warmly applauded messages, the event took place in two parts. Presented by İlkay Kıyak, the programme featured some 25 works of Turkish classical music in the hicaz, muhayyer, uşşak, bayati and mahur makams. In a programme that included pieces such as “Benzemez kimse sana” and “Ben melamet hırkasını kendim giydim kime ne”, a choir of around 90 people – retired doctors, lawyers and teachers – and the soloists won great acclaim for their performances. The audience sang along too.
