Swan Lake, one of the cornerstones of classical ballet, will be staged in Istanbul and Ankara by the Georgian State Ballet. Organised by Piu Entertainment, the performances will mark the company’s first presentation of this production in Türkiye.
Since 2004 the company has been led by Nina Ananiashvili, former principal dancer of the Bolshoi Ballet and American Ballet Theatre, named by The Daily Telegraph among the “12 greatest ballerinas of all time”. Ananiashvili adapted the libretto and created the choreographic version and staging together with Alexey Fadeechev, based on the classical choreography of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov.
First performed at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre in 1877, the ballet tells the story of Odette, turned into a swan by Rothbart’s curse, and Prince Siegfried. At the Istanbul performances, Tchaikovsky’s score will be played live by the Piu Symphony Orchestra under conductor Levan Jagaev.
Winner of a Herald Angel Award at the 2008 Edinburgh International Festival, the company also performed Swan Lake at the London Coliseum in 2024. Sets are designed by David Monavardisashvili, costumes by Cyrille Gassilline and lighting by Steen Bjarke.
