“1914 Kuşağı: Tanıdığımız Ressamlar” (The 1914 Generation: Painters We Know), the new temporary exhibition at the Türkiye İş Bankası Museum of Painting and Sculpture, opened on 26 September. Curated by Prof. Dr. Gül İrepoğlu, it brings together around 200 works from the Türkiye İş Bankası and Arkas collections.
The exhibition focuses on painters who received their first art training in Istanbul, were sent to study in Paris and returned home when the First World War broke out in 1914. Alongside works by İbrahim Çallı, Feyhaman Duran, Namık İsmail, Sami Yetik, Ali Sami Boyar, Hüseyin Avni Lifij, Mehmed Ruhi Arel, Nazmi Ziya Güran and Hikmet Onat, it also features their teachers, contemporaries and students.
Masterpieces on view include Fernand Cormon’s “Waiting”, İbrahim Çallı’s “Woman Smelling a Rose”, Feyhaman Duran’s “Girl in Blue Shalwar”, Namık İsmail’s “Threshing” and Hikmet Onat’s “Landscape–Ortaköy”, the first work in the İş Bankası Art Collection. A section titled “Those Who Shared the Time” covers their contemporaries, while “A Garden of a Thousand Shoots” presents their students.
İrepoğlu notes that these painters embraced Impressionism in Paris and played an important role in shaping artistic taste in society. A book prepared alongside the exhibition recounts the artists’ journeys to Paris through short stories built on dialogue.
