Thomas Ostermeier Directs in Türkiye for the First Time: Değişim / Dönüşüm Opens 3 November

Thomas Ostermeier, one of the leading directors in world theatre, is directing a production in Türkiye for the first time. “Değişim / Dönüşüm”, Maja Zade’s play translated and adapted into Turkish by Timuçin Esen, premieres at Zorlu PSM on 3 November.

The play was first staged under Ostermeier’s direction as “Changes” at the Schaubühne Berlin in 2004. Rehearsals began in July at Inspera Bodrum, and in the new production Timuçin Esen and Funda Eryiğit play a total of 22 characters.

At its centre is a married couple who look successful from the outside but whose lives are upended by the truths they hide: Mine, a politician in the middle of an election campaign, and her husband Tarık, who has left law to become a teacher and is struggling with a past addiction. Through two people caught between love, loyalty, addiction, power and conscience, the play asks whether people can really change.

Artistic director at the Schaubühne since 1999, Ostermeier has received numerous awards including the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale. In 2025 he directed Chekhov’s “The Seagull” with Cate Blanchett at London’s Barbican Theatre. “Değişim / Dönüşüm” is a co-production by Tatlı Ekşi Tiyatro, PMPEX and Antitez Sahne Sanatları.
